T-Mobile Charges Less for Data Plans But Throttles Speeds

T-Mobile Charges

T-Mobile, the country’s fourth largest wireless carrier announced that it will drop its overage charges on its 5GB monthly webConnect cell plan. Instead, customers who do go over their data limit will have their data speeds slowed. By how much? T-mobile did not say. They are only saying that in reality only a very small number of customers exceed the 5GB per month.

Additionally, the carrier cut the overage charges on its 200MB monthly plan by 50%. Overage charges for that plan are now $.10 instead of $.20. T-Mobile is also running a promotion on these plans. Existing T-Mobile subscribers can get the 200MB plan for $20 per month or the 5GB plan for $40 per month.

These price reductions and promotions on the T-Mobile plans are part of the carrier’s push of its HSPA+ network which is said to be available this year.  The company is also using these deals as a way to gain market share in this increasingly competitive wireless market.

Clearwire and Leap Wireless also retain the option of throttling speeds for overages while AT&T Mobility, Verizon Wireless, and Spring Nextel cap their 3GB data plans at 5GB.
